More players signed by the Calgary Roughnecks

Over the past few weeks the management has been busy signing players to the Calgary Roughneck organization. Some old, some new and some are somewhere in the middle.

Starting off with some of the names you’ll recognize, Jesse Phillips, Kaleb Toth, Lewis Ratcliff and fan fav Ryan McNish have all signed deals to stay with the Roughnecks. All of these guys have been signed to one year contracts and there has been no disclosure on any of the terms for any of the contracts — which in and of itself I find interesting because most hockey contracts are almost fully disclosed but that’s a thought for another day.

Those aren’t the only returning Roughnecks for the 2007 season, both Taylor and Devan Wray have signed one year deals as well. Once again, terms of the deals were not disclosed but according to some sources both intend to make Calgary their permanent home, which is fantastic news for the community as both brothers have done some amazing work with community organizations.

The new faces

As you may know, I have some reservations about the following deals but I’m willing to see how it all works out.

Both Jamie Rooney and Jeff Shattler were acquired from the Buffalo Bandits. Shattler was traded for Kevin Dostie and Rooney was signed as a free agent who was originally drafted by the Bandits in the 2004 draft — so yes, technically he did come from the Bandits but in a sense he didn’t.

A few completely new faces were signed by General Manager Kurt Silcott this month as well. Kevin Reid and Scott Ranger, both fresh from the WLA, and Nolan Heavenor were all signed to one year deals as well. While Ranger has played some NLL games with the San Jose Stealth and Heavenor has played with the Minnesota Swarm, Reid doesn’t have any NLL experience yet. All three are being billed as fantastic players and I’m looking forward to see what they can add to the team.

The draft

There hasn’t been too much information flowing about the upcoming Entry draft but with it being only half a month away it will be interesting to see if or how many more trades for draft picks will be made. At this point there has been no mention of any live coverage of the draft but I’m sure something will come up in the days before so we can follow along.
