New York newest National Lacrosse League expansion team
In a half time interview on Rogers Sportsnet during the Roughnecks vs. Rock game, Commissioner Jim Jennings gave the fans quite a scoop. When questioned about the rumors regarding the next 2007 expansion team for the National Lacrosse League, Jennings responded with a chuckle and coyly called the commentators on their putting him on the spot.
After a short pause, the Commissioner let loose the scoop stating that an official announcement hasn’t been made. Continuing along, Jennings said next year he may be “walking to a few games.” For those not in the know, the NLL office is located in New York.
There has been a lot of debate about whether there actually would be a second expansion team for the 2007 season. The debate raged further about the chosen city when it seemed that there would be another team. Most fans had thought — and hoped — that New York would be that team.
The New York Saints were previously in the National Lacrosse League before suspending operations in 2003. A transfer from the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, the Saints were brought in to the NLL fold during the 1997-98 season. This news will definitely be well received by many fans — and many New Yorkers I would think. Jennings was careful to mention that an official announcement should be out in the next couple weeks.
